The book of Ephesians 4:26 (AMPC) puts it this way:

“Let no foul or polluting language, nor evil word nor unwholesome or worthless talk [ever] come out of your mouth, but only such [speech] as is good and beneficial to the spiritual progress of others, as is fitting to the need and the occasion, that it may be a blessing and give grace (God’s favour) to those who hear it.”

Communication is as you know, the lifeblood, it’s everything in a marriage relationship. You can’t fall in love with a person, stay in love with a person you’re not communicating with. You certainly can’t, be intimate with a person that you’re not talking to. Moreover, like any other war, you know, when an enemy’s trying to defeat somebody, they try to cut their communication lines. That’s the same when the devil’s trying to destroy your marriage; what he tries to do is cut your communication lines. It’s so critical that as a married couple, you talk openly, honestly and talk proactively. In other words, you talk before things become an issue.

There are three types of communication in marriage; there’s proactive, reactive, and radioactive.

PROACTIVE COMMUNICATION

So, here’s wow does proactive communication looks like. Proactive communication means, we’re going to sit down proactively and speak about everything. We’re going to sit face to face, and talk about the children, money, sex and talk about, you know, the issues that we’re having before they become issues. Because we’re going to sit down and talk about them and resolve them.

REACTIVE COMMUNICATION

The second type of communication is reactive communication. In other words, we’re not talking proactively just reacting to everything.

Amos 3:3 says:

“Can two walk together, except they first agreed?”

The answer’s no. If you’re not talking with your spouse, you can’t walk together because you both are trying to go to different directions. You’re always reacting to situations, things, the children, money et cetera. However, when you sit down and talk together, you are both in agreement. You know something, you’re walking together for the rest of your lives. You would know you have one understanding about the children, money, about all kinds of things.

RADIOACTIVE COMMUNICATION

When you proactively communicate, it’s such a blessing; it’s such an enjoyable journey. When you don’t, you react. You’re reacting to money, reacting to the kids, reacting to work stress, reacting to all this and the other. What happens then, you start fighting, and then, it becomes radioactive. That means somebody’s going to get hurt. We can’t talk about this without name calling, without yelling, without an explosive temper and all kinds of things like that.

Radioactive communication is brutal and very damaging to any relationship. However, when you begin to sit down, as a husband/wife and patiently talk to your spouse about the things going on. Being humble to one another, and saying I am sorry. You start to resolve one conflict after the other, and begin to agree on the children, and decide on money, and agree on many things.

The entire atmosphere of your home will change you don’t react to issues anymore. You have no radioactive issues in our marriage because you sit down respecting each other, and are not afraid of the truth, proactively communicating.

You begin to enjoy the freedom of sharing the truth without attacking each other or being defensive. Whenever you do that, it changes everything. Your communication lines are open. You fall back in love if you’ve lost the passion in your marriage. You become intimate because you’re talking about everything. It’s such a beautiful thing to behold, to be able to communicate and connect in marriage. So maybe if you’ve lost the passion and intimacy of your relationship, you realise you’re not talking the way that you should, you be the first.

Be the first in your marriage to open up and begin to talk and tell your spouse, hey, let’s sit down. Let’s sit down and talk about money. Let’s sit down and develop a budget. Let’s sit down and develop a plan related to the children. Let’s sit down and talk about these critical issues of our marriage until we come into agreement and nothing is off-limits. When you do that, I promise, it changes everything.
